OUGD402 - Study Task 2 - What Is Graphic Design? - Part 1

Here we got into our blog group and showed each other all the work we'd found since the last time we saw each other. Typical me forgot to bring mine though so I had to send mine in an e-mail to my group later on that day.
We all made notes on each others examples in reference to their interests. We really learned a lot about each other and what inspires each other. Turns out I actually have a lot in common in regards to interests which is always a positive thing!

...................................................................................................................................................................

The notes I made were built of key words which came to mind when listening to each of them speak about the work they had chosen:

As a group we then needed to talk to each other and discuss the areas of design in which we have come across in our presentations to one another and this is what we discovered:

- CREATIVE USE OF TYPE
- VISUAL QUALITY
- TONE OF VOICE
- DETAIL
- SIMPLICITY                                                  The task we were given was
- MESSAGES                                                  to identify five of the categories
- ENGAGEMENT                                            and then find five examples of
- AESTHETIC                                                 each.
- MEDIA AND PRODUCTION                                                   |
- FORM/FORMAT                                                                    |
- PERSONAL INTEREST                                                         |
- VISUAL CONTENT                                                              |
- LANGUAGE                                                                       |
- STRUCTURE AND LAYOUT                                              |
                                                                                          |
                                                                                         |
I decided to choose the following:      <-------------------------

Creative Use Of Type, Visual Quality, Detail, Simplicity, and Personal Interest.

Creative Use Of Type:

My first example of creative use of type would be this poster designed by Goncalo Leite, a designer I discovered on graphic Exchange. His use of objects laid out in the shape of type is effective and very well done with illustrations and meaning.

Number two is by a designer named David De La Fuente, expressing a letterform as an object, the complete opposite to the post above, I love how clean and neat it is and how well it works perfectly. Very clever!

The next artist I am taking an example from is called Mattias Sahlén who takes the form of a verb and uses it against the word. This one of "falling" was my favourite due to its compostion and nature!

...................................................................................................................................................................

This artist named Tom Jaeger specialises in layout with type to make effective pieces of artwork, abstract or with meaning. Here is an example I really appreciated due to the nature of the 'A's acting as a form of wave.

...................................................................................................................................................................

This artist Andre Beato is an illustrator who has created pieces of work used in advertisements by all sorts of companies. This example shows the phrase Part Time Lover but without a typeface, just illustrated borders to make the letters seem apparent.

Visual Quality:

My first example of this would be this stunning piece of image manipulation by artist Christoffer Relander, who used a combination of photography and graphic design to create this beautiful work.

Here I have a portrait drawing by Ben-Ashton Bell, The quality of his work absolutely amazes me. He is my favourite artist by far and his design work is spectacular too. You will probably see a lot of his work on my blog because absolutely everything he does amazes me.

Emmanuel Prissette is an incredible designer who works with a variety of clients, this piece of work she produced caught my eye and I will definitely start keeping tabs on the artist.

Nigel Evan Dennis is a very intricate designer based in Chicago. He has worked for some massive brands and publications including Coca Cola, Sony, and others.

I absolutely love most adverts now but sometimes I will see one and I will just sit there for a moment taking it all in. I want to one day produce work that has that effect on people.

Detail:

I found this picture on the graphic exchange website of some bottle design incorrporating marvel comics into product manufacturing. These bottles have such a great idea behind them and are top notch on detail in each bottle!

This poster was done by Peter Crnokrak, it represents roughly what the title says: every person who lived and died on the planet, from 3200 B.C.E. to 2009 C.E. The total paper area represents the 78 billion people who lived over the past 5000 years. The gaping hole in the center represents every person who died in a major war, genocide, or massacre: approximately 969 million people, or 1.25% of the total number of people who have ever lived on the planet..

Claudia Muller is a painter who specialises in oil on canvas. Here is an example of her incredibly detailed paintings up close.

Another piece of art reflecting upon an eye. This one however is done with pencil using different shades and tones for features such as the reflections and skin details.

Simplicity:

I love basic typography so much. And when there is an effective meaning behind it, the art can be as simple as anything but the message is still amazingly shown.

...................................................................................................................................................................

More basic typography with an effective message.

This made me laugh so much when I saw it, shows how much a typeface can contain emotion just depending on if they are light or black!

I think I have a thing for humorous typography posters...

Another thing I have a love for is simple shape designs. The combination of two circles, or a rectangle and triangle or anything like that. I don't know what it is about them but they have always appealed to me!

Personal Interest:

I am very into my alternative music and have recently developed a love for a band called La Dispute. They tell stories through the method of song and I find it absolutely incredible as they are so talented and different to anything I have ever heard. Here is some album artwork for their newest release 'Wildlife" which is built from a vintage style photo overlapped by a scripted hand drawn logo with their band name displayed below in Times New Roman.

I absolutely love going to gigs and events and bringing along my SLR cameras (Digital or film). Photographing events, especially the gigs I go to see is always a great experience because of the energetic atmosphere of everyone having a good time which I adore capturing in image.

Screen printing is a form of art which I would love to learn/experiment. I see posters in shops knowing how they have been done but desperately wanting to do it myself! Here is an example of a screen-print in the style I'd love to create in.

I am fascinated and obsessed with photo/image manipulation. Changing a photo or image into something completely different would be one of my main strengths on this course but i want to develop this further and become able to produce very professional work with it.

Illustrating is something I love to do both in my free time and for work. I am not the best drawer in the world but I try my best to practice and get better so my work is more professional and a higher standard. I love either doing simple doodles or adding tonnes of detail into single pieces. Here is an example of the sort of thing i'd like to try and do if I have the time to. Lots of small illustrations on something massive.
